Needlework Box

A study project, learning how to dovetail, veneer, and fit secret hinges. The mathematical thing emerged as a Fibonacci Spiral on the Golden Section proportions of the box. I couldn’t resist turning it into a sewing thread in the middle!

It is made of steamed pear wood and “lacewood” which is actually London Plane. The client was, once again, my wife Sheila, who made the needle cushion. The catches are made from rosewood and lacewood.

Detail of carrying handle in lacewood and rosewood. The concealed button releases the catch.

Box interior showing contents. The small boxes use a “French Cleat” to hold them in place.
