About
Having worked as an architect for many years, making things in my spare time, I finally had the chance to devote myself fully to working with my hands. In 2017 I spent a wonderful six months with Marc Fish at Robinson House Studios in Sussex, learning the traditional skills and some intriguing new techniques. Marc has a design-oriented approach to making which I found very stimulating.
In architecture, design and making have become almost completely separate, to the detriment of both. It is a privilege now to take a project through all its stages. The design becomes informed by the making – the pieces invariably develop during the making stages.
My architectural background no doubt informs my furniture making. Structure is always a major driver, as is geometry. There is an inherent beauty in geometry, even if, as in my case, the theoretical knowledge is far from complete!
Most of my work is for family, friends and worthy causes, with the occasional commission. The main purpose is to explore how I can use my limited skills to make interesting things.
