Euler Seat

Another mathematical flight of fancy, based on a Euler Curve, or Clothoid. The shape is not arbitrary, it is oriented to catch the afternoon sun. It is made of western red cedar, a durable softwood. It is finished using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban method of charring. Although the shape looks complex, it is achieved with only two templates. The fan shape of the seat back is intended to reflect the form of the tall grasses which make up much of the garden planting.

I love western red cedar, it is so easy to work, has no knots and is very stable. I used it a lot in building projects, as it needs no preservatives.
