Mobius Lamp

I’ve always been intrigued by this form – a continuous loop incorporating a twist, with the result that it has only one surface and one edge. Marc Fish is the leading exponent of laminated veneer work, so I took the chance to make a lamp, using this technique. There are ten layers of veneer in the strip – two outer layers of Columbian pine with six inner layers of blue stained veneer, which is only exposed on the edges and either side of the light strip, which is set flush in the material by cutting away four layers of veneer. The light strip joins up with itself of course, thanks to Herr Mobius!

The base is made of stack laminated mdf, sprayed with a metallic bronze and polished.
