Japanese Dovetable

A small child’s table, to accompany the Fah Wong Stool which the same two year old client decided was right for her. It was a good opportunity to try out Japanese dovetail joints, hence the portmanteau title.

I learnt about this particular joint during my time at Robinson House Studios. The senior tutor, Theo Cook, is a master of it. It is assembled in a diagonal direction, which makes it a serious test of accuracy in setting out. It took me a good while, and was still far from perfect!

The top is cherry, and the sides are maple, with aim of matching the stool. Not a perfect match, as the stools were made with reclaimed cherry worktops, which have now been used up.
