Fah Wong Stools
Once again, my wife Sheila was the inspiration for these. She spent her early years in Hong Kong, where she remembered the gardener would squat on a tiny stool like this (Fah Wong = “gardener” in Cantonese).
I made her one of reclaimed cherry and beech, and then everyone wanted one! So I made two more, of different heights, in slightly different designs. Europeans don’t squat quite as easily as the Chinese, so they needed to be somewhat taller. One was immediately commandeered by the clients two year old daughter.
I am getting so many requests for these that I will have to find another source of reclaimed timber!

Stool no 3, the tallest, so a different design. The tusk tenon is in blackened oak.

The three stools together. The concave top face was cut using a 100 year old compass plane.
